Tips

  • Don’t preheat your oven for broiling or roasting.

  • Routinely check the seal on your oven door to check for cracks or tears.
  • Cook with lids on to permit lower temperature settings.
  • Try to minimize the amount of times you open your oven door while cooking.
  • Set timers when cooking with gas to reduce your cooking time.
  • Use water wisely when cooking to avoid having to heat more than needed.
  • Implement the habit of cooking on highest heat until liquid is boiling, then reduce heat to low.

Heating Systems

  • Take advantage of the sun’s natural heat! Leave blinds down to allow the sun to warm up the house.
  • Routinely check and service your heating equipment, including filter changes, heat exchanger cleaning, and fan coil cleaning.
  • Monitor your thermostat settings regularly. Programming thermostats is a cost-effective way to conserve energy.
  • Don’t block central heating registers with furniture, rugs, or other items.
  • Don’t switch thermostat to a higher setting when you first turn it on. Leave thermostat at a consistent temperature.
  • Research how many therms of natural gas your appliance uses before purchasing.
  • Insulate your attic, walls, floors, basement and ceilings to prevent loss of home’s energy during the winter and maintains energy cool during summer months.
  • Replace old pilot lights with electronic ignitions to save gas in fireplaces, ovens, ranges, and outdoor lighting systems.

Cooling Systems

  • Utilize ceiling fans to reduce air conditioning usage.
  • Regularly inspect cooling systems, change or clean filters, etc.
  • Instal a programmable thermostat and timer to help conserve (AC remains off while house is empty).

  • Consider motion detectors and sensors for indoor and outdoor lighting.
